The 2011 book A Dream, A Buck, An Era contains a brief bio of Tiny Lamar, at p. 51. His birth name was Andrew Peter Sabutis. He had been born in 1911 in Tacoma, Washington, to Lithuanian parents: his father had immigrated around 1905 to Tacoma, and his mother arrived in 1910. He had two brothers.

His father worked in a Tacoma lumber mill, and had bought a home in the Portland Avenue neighborhood. Tiny played a number of sports in high school, including wrestling, track and boxing. He reportedly had his first pro bout when he was just shy of 17, losing some teeth in his debut. Tacoma trainer Harold Jones took him under his wing.

His last name was sometimes spelled "LeMarr" or "Lamarr."
