  • Date: 1967-02-02
  • Location: K.B. Hallen, Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Referee: Ejner Roth

The 23 year old middleweight hope from Denmark Tom Bogs faced his first American in an undefeated 26 -bout career and won on KO. He took 3 rounds to carefully figure out the difficult " American " style of the 63 fight veteran Ernest Burford of Memphis. The difficulty with Burford, who had fought the likes of Joey Giardello, Henry Hank and Rubin Carter, was his bobbing and weaving and the non- continental way of hitting the kidneys and the back of the head while in clinch. In the 4th a right hook hit Burford above his eye. He went down, got up rather quickly but clutched his eye and staggered around the ring, not beeing able to regain his fighting stance as referee Ejner Roth counted the 10.

Burford was talkative and amiable with the press afterwards. After almost a lecture on his long career he predicted that Bogs one day would become European Champ. " If not, then it's his own fault. "
