  • "Despite the most gallant effort, Jack Delaney today was just a great light heavyweight and not a battler to mix with the big boys. In 15 tugging, bruising rounds, Tom Heeney from New Zealand, last night outcuffed Delaney in MSG. Delaney was outslugged, outroughed and outlasted by one of the ruggedest of present-day fighters. The result, however, did not meet with the approval of the 18,000 fans who packed the arena. For 15 rounds Heeney stayed on top of Delaney silencing the big gun in the Canadian's right hand. The highest point in the engagement came in the 10th session, when Delaney crashed a left hook to the sturdy chin of Heeney. For the first time, despite his 20-pound advantage, Heeney wavered under the impact. Delaney cut loose in all directions but that solid chin took it all." -Associated Press

    • Unofficial AP scorecard - 8-6-1 Heeney

    Post-fight comments

    • "It was a terrible scramble and must have been awful to watch. It takes two to make a fight and he held me at every turn. He's not one-third the puncher they said he was." -Tom Heeney
    • "I thought I won. They told me in the corner that I had nine rounds and I rated the pace accordingly. Honestly, I thought I had a nice lead at the close. Heeney was just pushing not punching." -Jack Delaney
