Pro Boxer: Record

Tommy Donovan, who died in June 1969, was one of New Zealand's greatest boxers. He had 48 professional bouts, 28 of them against imports, and lost only seven. His greatest adversary was contemporary compatriot John Leckie. Although Leckie had a 2-1 advantage, with two draws, in their head-to-head meetings, Donovan did better against other opponents. He beat Petey Sarron three times, while Leckie had a 2-3 record against Sarron, two of the losses being by KO. Donovan beat Young Llew Edwards, Tommy Crowle, and Billy Grime -- all of whom won decisions over Leckie.

Donovan's son, Paddy, was five times New Zealand featherweight and lightweight amateur champion, and represented his country at two Olympic and two British Empire Games. (Sporting Post, Saturday, 21 June 1969).

Tommy Donovan was employed as a fireman and engine driver for New Zealand Railways.
