Tommy Egan vs. Tommy James
Tommy Egan 149 lbs beat Tommy James 149 lbs by TKO in round 8 of 10
- Date: 1948-01-16
- Location: Armory, Tacoma, Washington, USA
- Referee: Davey Ward
Referee Davey Ward ruled James was in no condition to continue because of three severe cuts around the eyes.
Egan, a sharpshooter with both hands, had won every round by varying margins, although James, overly-cautious during the first couple of heats, made a fight of it thereafter.
Egan nailed James with dozens of good punches, sizzling left hooks and straight rights, but had his rangier Negro foe down only once, dropping him for a no-count midway in the sixth round. James hopped to his feet and climbed on his bicycle to last out the heat, however.
As early as the second round, Egan was bleeding from a cut over his left eye and James was obviously aiming for the wound the rest of the way. The San Franciscan's handlers attended to the cut effectively, however, and he didn't seemed to be bothered.
The lacerations around James' left optic appeared all at once, a minute after the seventh round got underway, and Egan lost no time exploiting the situation. By the time the stanza was over, the eye was almost closed and oozing gore in copious quantities." Tacoma News Tribune
