Tommy Fairhall was the Commonwealth (British Empire) lightweight champion in 1928 and the Australian welterweight champion in 1930. Fairhall vacated the Australian title in 1931, while fighting in New Zealand.

In 1923, Fairhall suffered a jaw injury in his bout with Jack Finney. Two weeks later, after his match with Eugene Volaire, an x-ray discovered his jaw was fractured. Fairhall took three months to recover.

After leaving the ring, Fairhall joined with a New Zealand expeditionary contingent and was active in Greece, Crete, and Palestine in World War II.

The Cessnock Eagle and South Maitland Recorder said of Fairhall, "He was scrupulously fair, and acted the gentleman and sportsman both inside and outside the ring."
