Tommy Foss attended the University of Massachusetts for two years and then was drafted. He won several Army titles and finished his amateur career by gaining the Washington D.C. AAU title in the middleweight division in 1967. Foss learned how to box under the tutelage of Holly Mims while stationed at the Walter Reed Memorial Hospital in Washington, and his style was similar to Mims. Foss was managed by Roger Sala.
