The referee stopped the bout in the 6th round and awarded it to Impellitiere because of a cut on Loughran's lip. Loughran protested while 6000 onlookers stormed. Brigadier General John S. Phelan, chairman of the State Athletic Commission, overruled the intervention and shouted to Hartley to have the bout resume. (James P. Dawson, New York Times) Impellitiere entered this fight with a reported record of 11-0 (11).
