By December 7 1927, Welshman Tommy White, reigning flyweight champion of Western Canada, had reportedly fought 9 bouts in Canada; winning 5, drawing 2 and losing two decisions to Wing Lee. Previous to his arrival in Canada in December 1926, White had won the Welsh and Midlands flyweight title. He had also fought, among others, Ernie Jarvis and had served as a sparring partner for Jimmy Wilde.
