"Unbeaten Tony Ayala, San Antonio, hammered his way to a title shot Saturday night knocking out No. 1 ranked Carlos Herrera of Argentina in the 3rd round of a 12 round junior middleweight title elimination bout. Ayala opened a cut over Herrera's right eye with a wicked left hook in the 1st round and kept the pressure on in the 2nd. Herrera appeared to rally in the 3rd and started to connect with combinations but late in the round, Ayala connected with a ferocious left hook that wobbled Herrera's knees and followed with another left hand that sent Herrera sprawling. Herrera struggled to his feet at the count of nine but fell over backward again." -United Press International
