"Barney Ross, 134 3/4, of Chicago, wrested the 135-pound championship from Tony Canzoneri, 133 1/2, of New York, in a thrilling 10-round battle here tonight. Ross, who battled his way up the fistic ladder, came from behind with a thrilling rally which snatched the title from Canzoneri. At the end of the 7th round, Ross had both eyes cut, had been outsmarted and outpunched by Canzoneri and looked like a beaten warrior. But the tide turned in the 8th when Ross slashed three vicious left hooks to Canzoneri's head. Tony's legs suddenly went dead on him, his arms grew limp and the sting went out of his fists. Inspired by his success in the 8th and 9th, Ross let go with everything in the final round. Canzoneri almost matched him, but was just short of gaining an even break." -United Press

Post-fight comments
- "I beat Tony and fought just as I planned. He was a great champion and I'm going to be a great one too. He can have a return match any time he wants it." -Barney Ross
- "The decision was the surprise of my entire career. Honestly, I thought I was so far ahead of Ross that I coasted in the 8th and 9th and did not extend myself in the 10th." -Tony Canzoneri
- "I called it a draw because Ross' margin was so slight. I think a challenger should win so decisively that there is no question when a championship is at stake." -Referee Tommy Gilmore
- "The decision was right. Ross won by a good margin." -Packey McFarland, former fighter and now member of the Illinois State Athletic Commission
