Tony Canzoni
Name: Tony Canzoni
Hometown: Cleveland, Ohio, USA
Pro Boxer: Record
Amateur Boxer: Record
Tony Canzoni was one of those pro boxers who took part in bootleg boxing that was prevalent in the late 1920s and into the 1930s in upstate New York.
These reported “amateur” shows took place in Binghamton, Cortland, Syracuse, and Utica, among other places, and featured paid fighters. They often had professionals fighting under assumed names or even using their own names. Lou Ambers, Louis DiSantis, Frankie Wallace, Mickey Barron, Babe Amos, and many others took part.
This was typically done to avoid paying fees to the New York State Athletic Commission.
The way a lot of these bouts are currently recorded, such as here for Canzoni, it appears as if fighters are jumping back and forth between the pro and amateur ranks based on the location of their bouts.
