- Referee: Mel Manning
Stiff punching Tony DeMarco, the world’s seventh-ranked welterweight contender from Boston, floored rugged Pat Manzi of Syracuse three times in the first round to gain a technical knockout at 1:06 of the first round at the Boston Arena. DeMarco weighed 145 ½, Manzi 146 ½.
The 22-year-old DeMarco vaulted into top flight contention for Johnny Saxton’s welter crown with a sensational display of power telecast throughout the nation with New England blacked out.
Manzi, noted as a heavy puncher with a knockout victory over Joe Miceli and a decision over Al Andrews, was unable to avoid the fury of DeMarco’s left hook-right cross combinations.
DeMarco, who stopped the highly ranked Chris Christensen of Denmark in his last start, now has a victory string of 15 straight.
Manzi bolted from his corner at the opening bell and was wild with a long, lunging left. He missed with several other attempts, before DeMarco stepped in and landed a blow.
When Manzi missed a left and a right, DeMarco stepped in and belted him with a jolting left hook. Manzi went down flat on his back but pulled himself up before the referee completed the mandatory eight count. DeMarco floored Manzi for a second time in the brief bout with a hard left and right. Manzi pulled himself up at the count of three and took the rest of the referee's toll while standing.
The Boston slugger went right after his opponent again, refusing to let him get away. After feinting with a left, he shot across the right and followed up with the left that meant the end for Manzi (AP)
