Tony Janiro 151 lbs beat Charley Fusari 148 lbs by MD in round 10 of 10

"Charlie Fusari's hopes of a title fight with welterweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson were messed up Wednesday night by the two-fisted Tony Janiro of Youngstown, Ohio. Janiro surged back into the top ranks of the welterweight division by thrashing the Irvington, N.J. favorite. The bout was to have been Fusari's last tuneup for a possible title bout with Robinson. Neither fighter, however, showed too much in the opening five rounds and they drew a between-rounds-warning from referee Lou Handler. This apparently built a fire under Janiro. He moved to the attack when the 6th round got underway and held the edge from then on. Janiro staggered Fusari in the 8th, and in the 9th inflicted a cut over the right eye of Fusari. Janiro clinched his victory with a 10th round attack that had Fusari in trouble repeatedly." -Associated Press

  • IBC President Jim Norris stated that if Fusari won, he would arrange the title fight with Sugar Ray Robinson tentatively for March 31st in Madison Square Garden. However, even though he lost, Fusari got the title fight anyway, but on August 9th in Roosevelt Stadium in New Jersey.
