Tony Licata vs. Jean Mateo
Tony Licata lost to Jean Mateo by KO in round 8 of 10
- Date: 1976-03-06
- Location: Hippodrome, Paris, Paris, France
- Referee: Pierre Talayrac
"Jean Mateo, an unranked Frenchman who learned to box in Stockton, Calif., floored Tony Licata three times before knocking out America's top-ranked middleweight in the 8th round of their fight at the Hippodrome Saturday night. The Frenchman, who was easily hit, seemed to ignore Licata's punches. By the 6th round Mateo began to connect and knocked Licata down with a left hook. Licata wobbled through the round, fighting back, after getting up at eight, but another left hook sent him back to the canvas in the 7th round. Licata, of Tampa, Fla., was dazed and bleeding heavily from the mouth when he went down for the last time a minute into the 8th round. He had been up at the count of five 30 seconds earlier, then crumpled again under a strong right hand." -Associated Press
