As an amateur, under the guidance of Tony Storace, Vero won the A.A.U. Silver Gloves and Diamond Belt Championship. On his 17th birthday, Vero enlisted in the U.S. Marines where he became a member of the famous Southeastern Champion Parris Island boxing team which consisted of Artie Levine, Frankie Carto, Lefty LaChance, Jimmy Carrollo, Russ Sawyer and Billy Jordan. While Vero was in the Marine Corps, he was trained by Homer Foglio. When all three were discharged, Storace and Foglio signed him to a post-war boxing career.
