Tony Zale 163 lbs beat Steve Mamakos 161 lbs by MD in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 1941-01-10
  • Location: Chicago Stadium, Chicago, Illinois, USA
  • "NBA middleweight champion Tony Zale of Gary, Ind., looked like a champion in only two rounds Friday night, just long enough to drop tough Steve Mamakos of Washington, D.C., a few notches down the list of contenders for his middleweight crown with a majority decision in a 10-round non-title fight at Chicago Stadium. Mamakos never before has met a full-fledged middleweight but he forced the fight at the opening bell and was all even at the end of three rounds. However, once each in the 4th and 9th rounds Zale caught Mamakos with fierce left hooks to the head, and each time the rugged Greek flopped down on the seat of his trunks. He was up before a count, but he came up staggering, easy prey for Zale's two-fisted followups. Somehow Mamakos weathered the barrage in each round he was knocked down, and he still was on his feet swinging at the end of 10 rounds." -United Press
