Hamer, out of Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn, beat southpaw Lenroy Thompson in the quarter final (avenging his only loss) and went on to win the National Golden Gloves at Super Heavyweight in 2008. His amateur record was 34-1. On June 20, 2012, Hamer won the British Prizefighter Tournament ay York Hall in London by decisioning Kevin Johnson in the final, his biggest victory to that point.
Personal life
Hamer was raised in Harlem and suburban Baltimore, where he attended private and charter schools. He attended Penn State University and earned his B.A. degree. He has a Harvard-educated father and a Villanova-educated mother, both of whom work in education.
