Everett earns shot at title

Tyrone Everett of Philadelphia scored a sixth-round technical knockout over Korean Hyun Chi Kim Thursday night and probably earned a shot at the junior lightweight title.

Everett had opened cuts over Kim's eyes in the fourth and fifth rounds and referee Pete Tomasco finally stopped the fight at 1:25 of the sixth round after Kim complained that he couldn't see.

In the first two rounds, the 130-pound Everett started slowly by feeling out his opponent, who was half a pound lighter.

But Everett scored with combinations and jabs in the third round and it was a right jab in the fourth that opened up the cut over Kim's left eye.

In the fifth, Everett opened a cut over Kim's right eye.

Everett, ranked number two in the World Boxing Association's professional ratings, is 27-0 with 16 knockouts, and the third-ranked Kim is 23-2 with nine KOs.

Kim's only other defeat was by junior-lightweight champ Ben Villaflor, who suffered a detached retina and may be forced to retire.

If Villaflor does retire, Everett will probably be matched with first-ranked Sammy Serrano of Puerto Rico for the championship.
