Valere Mahau vs. Paul Kraus
Valere Mahau lost to Pauli Kraus by PTS in round 8 of 8
- Date: 1967-06-26
- Location: Jordal Amfi Ice Stadium, Oslo, Norway
Both the Belgian Valere Mahau and the Dutchman Paul "Bomber" Kraus had gained much weight since they fought in Oslo. Kraus still possessed some of his punching power which had put Ray Patterson on the deck in Oslo in 1965, while Mahau now was too fat for his bobbing and weaving which made him a difficult target for Norwegian heavy Bjarne Lingaas, also in 1965.
The "Bomber" tried hard to knock out Mahau, but didn't succeed. Yet the Belgian was so groggy at the end of the 1st that he couldn't find his corner. On a third attempt he finally discovered his cornermen. In the 2nd he complained about low blows from Kraus, but it was very hard for the referee to see the actual line between Mahau's shorts and rings of fat. Mahau was down in the 3rd and 4th, but by now the 4000 at the Jordal Amfi enjoyed the farce and cheered the Belgian on, inspiring him to last the distance of 6 rounds.
" Laughable and ridiculous," wrote Leif K.Nilsen of Aftenposten,Oslo.
