  • "World featherweight champion Vicente Saldivar of Mexico stopped Howard Winstone of Wales Saturday night in 2:10 of the 12th round. Winstone's manager, Eddie Thomas, threw a towel into the ring as the champion pounded the defenseless challenger across the ring with blood streaming from the latter's nose and a cut eye. Winstone was downed by one of Saldivar's left crosses with a minute and 20 seconds left in the round but stumbled to his feet at the count of eight. Saldivar dominated this third meeting with Winstone and was building up a big point margin when the end came. The end to the fight came as the British and European featherweight champion kept his feet but could not defend himself from the avalanche of blows." -Associated Press

    • When the bout ended Saldivar took the microphone and announced his retirement to the audience.

    Post fight comment

    • "I had already planned to retire when the time came, although I had not made the decision yet when I stepped into the ring. I will take some rest and decide what to do in my new life." -Vicente Saldivar
