"Friday night's punishing loss to Vilomar Fernandez of New York in a nationally televised bout at the Cow Palace was a stunning setback for Ray Lunny's hopes of a possible showdown with Tyrone Everett of Philadelphia. And the pain of the punches and of his first professional loss was evident in Ray's eyes. Fernandez upped his record with barrages of punches that staggered Lunny in the 1st round and his right cross to the chin forced Lunny to take a standing eight count in the 3rd. In the 9th, a Fernandez left hook put Ray on the canvas for an eight count. The last round was joy for Fernandez. He danced to victory, show-boating for the folks back home." -The San Mateo Times
Post fight comments
- "He just moved around and fought his fight and I stood there and did nothing except catch punches. It was total ineptness on my part. He's a good, strong-punching kid and I just walked into his right hands, compounding his power." -Ray Lunny III
- "I'm happy, I came out in the 1st round ready to knock him out. We knew he held his hands low - I worked with my manager on that." -Vilomar Fernandez
- "Keeping your hands low doesn't affect your defense. Defense is your ability to see the trouble and react. We're not going to change. I disagree with Ray - Fernandez isn't that good a fighter. Still, Ray just didn't have it tonight." -Ray Lunny, Ray III's manager and father
