Kozak was the heavyweight boxing champion of the United States Army in the English theater during World War II. Kozak who served as a member of the First Army Police Unit, arrived in Normandy a few days after D-Day, and was killed after an enemy shell landed near a bridge he was guarding. Kozak's death was reported in the August 9, 1944 Stars and Stripes.
