Virgil Akins 148 lbs lost to Del Flanagan 150 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 1958-09-18
  • Location: Auditorium, Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA
  • Referee: Billy McCabe
  • Judge: 92-99

"A victory over welterweight champ Virgil Akins sent the up and down career of Del Flanagan soaring to a new summit today. But as far as Akins' camp is concerned Flanagan may as well enjoy the view - he's not getting a title shot as long as Akins holds the crown. Whatever happened, Akins was scarcely in the fight, a non-title 10 rounder. Flanagan's speed and neat combination punching won him a wide early margin. Akins, apparently protecting bruises above his eyes inflicted last month by Tombstone Smith, didn't start swinging his good wallops until the 5th." -Associated Press

  • "He won the fight all right, and he did another thing. He's never going to fight us with the title on the line. How do you fight a man like that? He was holding Akins all night." -Bernie Glickman, Akins' manager
