"Virgil Akins of St. Louis, an 11-5 underdog at ring time, floored Cuban Isaac Logart twice, gashed his right brow and won a TKO at 2:53 of the 6th round. It was the second victory over Logart in their three fights and clinched for Virgil a final 15 round match with Vince Martinez of Paterson, N.J., for the vacant 147 pound crown on June 6th. Ike was being battered unmercifully on the ropes when referee Harry Kessler stopped the fight. Akins' victory in the nationally televised bout was cheered by the 5,000 Garden spectators." -United Press

• Logart led 4-1 on all three scorecards at the time of the stoppage.

• Although Logart was heavily favored, persistent roumors of "smart money" coming in on Akins caused authorities to place wire taps on those affiliated with the bout. Those recorded conversations caused at least a dozen summons to be served after the bout - including Akins, Logart, their respective handlers and IBC matchmaker Billy Brown - for an April 7th Manhattan criminal court grand jury hearing. It was learned that the heavy betting was on the distance of the bout - whether it would go 12 or not - however, it was stated that the knockdowns scored by Akins did indeed appear to be legitimate.
