• Harris began boxing at the age of 12 after being challenged by a schoolmate.
• Harris seized the Guyana junior championships three times from 1991-1993, and then was selected as Guyana's #1 amateur boxer in 1993.
• Moved to Brooklyn, NY at age 16 to live with his mother and older brother, former middleweight contender, Wayne Harris.
• In 1994, after moving to New York, Harris tested his technical skills against American boxers.
• Harris excelled in U.S. amateur competition, compiling a record of 45-5 with 32 KO's.
