"Light heavyweight contender Erich Schoeppner of Germany survived three knockdowns Saturday night and extended his unbeaten string to 39 bouts with a 10-round decision over former contender Von Clay of Philadelphia. Clay, who had accepted the fight as a substitute on less than a week's notice, almost knocked out the 29 year old Schoeppner in the 8th round - but not quite. Clay smashed Schoeppner to the canvas with a right to the chin in the 8th for a count of eight, but the fast-footed German evaded a KO." -United Press International
