"Wallace (Bud) Smith, 138 1/4, an aggressive lightweight ranked 5th nationally, today was in line for bigger and better things, as his convincing victory over Canadian lightweight champion Arthur King, 137 1/2, indicated he is ready to move up. Smith, from Cincinnati, in scoring his 3rd straight TKO at Brooklyn's Eastern Parkway Arena Monday night, battered the Canadian, who is ranked 4th, with a two-handed attack. His quick-punching to the head and body staggered King, who was forced to quit at the end of five rounds." -United Press

  • The accompanying UP article also referred to King as the British Empire lightweight champion, which was incorrect. King had won the title in 1948 but never defended it and the vacant title was contested earlier in the year between Frank Johnson and Frank Flannery on January 23, 1953 and won by Johnson.
