Vinnie Cidone 156 lbs lost to Walter Cartier 161 lbs by TKO at 1:18 in round 1 of 10

  • Date: 1949-04-22
  • Location: St. Nicholas Arena, New York, New York, USA
  • Referee: Eddie Joseph

The first punch of the fight from Cartier, a left hook, floored Cidone for a three-count. A follow-up body barrage from Cartier then floored Cidone for a second time, for a two-count. Cidone held as he arose, and appeared to be wrestled through the ropes, with the referee recording another knockdown, with Cidone taking an eight count before he arose. As the two resumed fighting, Cidone held again in the middle ring, and it appeared that Cartier again had wrestled Cidone to the canvas. Referee Eddie Joseph promptly intervened with Cidone on the canvas for the 4th time in the round.

The crowd expressed its displeasure by screaming at Joseph and pelting the ring with garbage. When Joseph returned to referee the Bobby Bell-Charley Titone match, the fans resumed throwing garbage into the ring.
