Wilfred Benitez 155 lbs beat Tony Chiaverini 155 lbs by TKO in round 8 of 10

"Wilfred Benitez, with an 8th round TKO win over Tony Chiaverini under his belt, wants another shot at the welterweight title he lost only eight months ago. In a nationally televised junior middleweight fight at Caesar's Palace, Benitez, of San Juan, Puerto Rico, held a commanding lead on the scorecards of all three judges and the AP until Chiaverini's manager, Angelo Dundee, stopped the scheduled 10-round fight after eight rounds. Chiaverini, of Kansas City, had a large hometown rooting section backing him but managed to win only the 2nd round in the bout. His obvious strategy in the first few rounds was to cut off the ring and keep Benitez on the ropes. But the former champion managed to break free from the tactic in the 5th round, then scored heavily on Chiaverini in the 6th. He met Chiaverini with a looping right hand at the start of the round, followed up with three quick rights to the head, a left, then a punishing left-right combo that left Chiaverini reeling." -Associated Press
