"Wilfredo Gomez left some doubt as to the creditability of his reputation in the first three rounds of fighting against WBC super bantamweight titleholder, Dong-Kyun Yum of South Korea. Yum was stopped in the 12th, but not disgraced. With the bout less than a minute old, Yum surprised his younger rival by flooring him with a sweeping left hook to the jaw. The Korean champ took command in the initial round as well as the 2nd and 3rd. Gomez, on the other hand, played it cool while he regained his wits. Yum shook Gomez again in the 3rd but was unable to drop him. The panorama changed completely in the 4th. Gomez began to land with precision and the champion began to feel the force of his rival's heavy-powered fists. It was all Gomez from this moment on. In the 11th the game Korean was battered from pillar to post, signaling the end was near. In the 12th, at 2:20 of the round, referee Dick Young signaled the bout was over when, with a final volley of blows, Gomez stretched Yum out on the canvas for the fatal 10-count." -Ring Magazine, September 1977 issue
- Purses - Yum - $90,000, Gomez - $25,000
