From the United Press International:
Unranked light heavyweight Wayne Thornton scored the first major boxing upset of 1963 Saturday night by giving third-ranked Willie Pastrano a body beating for a unanimous 10-round decision in their nationally televised fight at MSG. Thornton, a 3-1 underdog, had veteran Pastrano groggy in several rounds from combination rights to the body and left hooks to the head as he scored his ninth straight victory in his eastern professional debut. At the finish, Pastrano was not only bleeding from a cut under his left eye and slightly from the mouth but his body was battered raw. It was only his courage, ruggedness and ring guile that prevented his being knocked out last night.

Post-Fight Comments
- "Pastrano is hard to nail solidly to the head. And when I did nail him, he 'cuted' his way out of danger. I almost had him in the seventh, but he got away." - Wayne Thornton
- "He wore me down with his body punches. I wanted to press him in the middle of the fight but I couldn't. He slowed me down. He's very strong and willing." - Willie Pastrano
- "We'll try to bring them back again to the Garden on March 23." - Harry Markson, managing director of MSG, proposing a rematch.
- "The best fighter I've seen out of California since Fred Apostoli." - Teddy Brenner, MSG matchmaker, on Thornton.
