- Note: Audie Murphy was training for a professional boxing career after World War II. He was living in a backroom of the boxing gym on a cot. Actor James Cagney was working out at the gym and saw Murphy taking a shower and noticed his badly damaged hip area. Cagney questioned the gym owner about "that boxer," and was surprised to learn that he was America's most decorated war hero. Cagney had Murphy move into a cottage home on his estate and got him a screen-test; the rest is screen history.
