Yancey Henry was born in Alabama but later lived in Lynn, Massachusetts, where he became an outstanding amateur. In 1936 he was the AAU heavyweight champion. In all, he had 62 amateur fights.
Henry turned professional in Massachusetts, but then went to California, where he continued his career. In 1942 he fought out of Pittsburgh. After a stint in the United States Army, he fought twice in San Francisco, but then came east and fought mainly in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore area. In 1946 he was knocked out by Jimmy Bivins and Curtis Sheppard, and was hospitalized after the Sheppard loss, which was his last fight.
Henry's record appeared in the 1946 and 1947 editions of The Ring Record Book. Several fights (undated, usually no location given) that appear in that record have not yet been verified as follows:
1937 W ko 5, Baby Batter 1937 W ko 1, Maynard Daniels 1939 W ko 6, Frank Benson, Los Angeles, W ko 6
There are some misspellings of the names of Henry's opponent; in particular, "Gene Bonham" was Gene Bonin, and "Red Ghnouly" was Earl (Red) Conway).
- An article in the Nashua, NH Telegraph said that Henry stood 6'4 1-2" tall.
