"American light heavyweight Alvaro 'Yaqui' Lopez moved a step closer to a shot at the world title Friday night with a 3rd round knockout of Australian Tony Mundine. Mundine went on the offensive from the outset and appeared to have Lopez in trouble. He cut Lopez around the eyes, and the American had blood pouring down the left side of his face toward the end of the 1st round. Mundine, sensing victory, followed up in round two with some solid crosses and also landed a series of shuddering uppercuts. But toward the end of the 3rd round, Mundine let his defense slip just long enough for Lopez to move in with a rally to the head and kidneys which the gasping Mundine was unable to counter. Following a medical check which indicated the likelihood of a fractured rib, Mundine was taken from the arena by his trainer." -Associated Press
