Choi was dropped with five seconds remaining in the twelfth round in their WBO Intercontinental flyweight title clash and barely beat the count to win the fight, but then collapsed while still in the ring. He has rushed to the Soonchunhyang University Hospital and underwent emergency brain surgery. He was pronounced brain-dead on January 2, 2007.
