He was born at McDonnell Street, off the Falls Road in west Belfast.

Young Gabriel, whose real name was Gabriel Young, is the older brother of former Belfast middleweight Frank Young and southpaw light-middleweight Gerry Young.

Gabriel Young won the 1962 Ulster amateur welterweight title, and in the same year lost in the Irish final to outstanding Irish international Harry Perry of Dublin.

After this, Gabriel Young turned professional, with Londoner Jack Burns as his manager.
