Young Jack Dempsey, whose birth name was James Elton LaFavor, was the son of James W. LaFavor (born in Texas 1865; died in Washington state, April 13, 1941) and Amelia Burry (born 1860 in Pennsylvania, died in 1936). Elton's grandparents were James Eugene LaFavor (born in France July 28, 1835; died August 17, 1902), who married 1864 in Texas to Elizabeth Brown (born 1818 in Ireland). Elton (Young Jack Dempsey) was married to Julia Solkosky.

He is not to be confused with the late 1920s Tacoma featherweight boxer Young Jack Dempsey.

The March 1, 1967 Pierce County Herald and Puyallup Valley Tribune describe how LaFavor caught the eye of boxing manager Chet McIntyre. Under McIntyre's ring savvy, LaFavor turned pro in 1920.

Elton LaFavor worked for the City of Puyallup (Washington) in his later years after his professional boxing ended.
