During this era there were countless boxers named "Young Langford" or "Young Sam Langford" after the legendary Sam Langford.

This Young Sam Langford originated out of San Francisco around 1915 or 1916, before heading north to fight in Portland and other Northwest locales. Langford, during the period of 1918-21, was fighting as a 126 to 130 pound fighter. It is assumed that he continued in the Northwest through the remainder of the 20's.

Questions regarding the record begin to arise in 1924, due to the appearance of another Young Sam Langford in California who was fighting at lightweight or welterweight. Dates of bouts from both Langford records would lead one to believe that due to time constraints from travel and even bouts on the same date, that there were two Langfords. It is entirely possible though that either Langford may have fought in the Northwest or California. (In fact the other Langford came to the Northwest with Young Jack Thompson in 1930 and did have a few bouts in the Northwest in Klamath Falls, Portland, and Wenatchee, at the very least.)

Pictures of Young Sam Langford appear in the Portland Oregonian leading up to his 1921 bout with Joe Gorman.
