Retirement
- Yuji Kanemitsu, by rule of the Japanese Boxing Commission, was forced into retirement following his March 21, 2009 bout against Masatate Tsuji. Following the bout, both fighters were taken to the hospital where Tsuji died three days later with a brain hemorrhage. It was the first boxing related death to occur from a Japanese title fight. Kanemitsu, who also suffered a slight brain injury, officially announced his retirement on April 11, 2009.
