Yussel Pearlstein

Yussel Pearlstein whose real name was Joe or Joseph (Yussel is Joe or Joseph in Yiddish) started boxing as Young Stone and/or Joe Stone in 1920 mainly fighting out of Quincy, Massachusetts. In 1922 he began fighting as Joe Pearlstein and Yussel Pearlstein and styled himself as the Heavyweight Champion of Palestine. While it is unknown if Joe had any family at that time living in Palestine it’s clear from the historical record that this was an inventive fabrication. Maybe now close to his complete record. Pearlstein had a very up and down career but did manage to defeat some very fine fighters like Leo Gates, Joe Borrell, Al Roberts, Hambone Kelly and depending on the newspaper source defeated George Ashe.
