Zack Ferguson was a gifted amateur boxer, who won titles as a Texas State high school and novice heavyweight champion in the Golden Gloves. He also won the Red River National Invitational Championships in 1973 and 1974. He won the Irish MacNeel National Invitational Tourney in Shreveport, La. in 1972 and 1973. He was a Southern and Southwestern Diamond Belt champion and upset several highly ranked amateur heavyweights in the 1970s. In the early 1970s, he was the number two feared southpaw heavyweight out of Texas behind Nick Wells. Ferguson and Wells were teammates on UAW 218 Boxing Club that produced loads of champions.
