"Mexico's Zovek Barajas, using a speedy left jab, carved up former welterweight champ Billy Backus and scored a 3rd round knockout in the scheduled 10 round main event Thursday night at Olympic Auditorium. Referee Chuck Hassett halted the battle 52 seconds into the 3rd round with Backus bleeding profusely from cuts over both eyes. Barajas opened a cut over Backus' right eye in the opening round. In the 2nd, he opened a cut over the other eye and by the end of the round the Canastota, N.Y., boxer was bleeding heavily. Dr. Bernhart Schwartz examined Backus after the 2nd round and allowed the bout to continue, but when Barajas immediately reopened both cuts, the referee again asked Dr. Schwartz to examine Backus and the fight was stopped." -The L.A.
