Regarded by many as the Hardest hitter in Boxing history. Muhammad Ali, who won a unanimous decission over Shavers, would later be quoted in a interview about the hardest hitter he ever faced, saying, "Earnie hit me so hard, he shook my kinfolk back in Africa!". Also, in the same statement. Ali would respond to the interviewer's question saying, "It was a guy named, Earnie Shavers."

Larry Holmes, who fought Mike Tyson and Gerry Cooney, said the same thing several years after his retirement saying, "Being hit by Mike Tyson was like getting hit by a speeding Ferrari, being hit by Earnie Shavers was like being hit by a Mac Truck!"

But like so many of Boxing's hardest punchers, Shavers' chin was dodgey and his stamina was poor until later in his career. Though he never won the world title, but was involved in some of the greatest fights in the history of the sport including his second fight with Larry Holmes, Muhammad Ali, and Ron Lyle, in which he nearly collected Lyle with one left hand.
