"Smith copped the decision from Charles Coates in ten rounds of the best fighting among the big fellows ever seen here, and there was none to argue when referee George Cunningham raised his hand without hesitating. The score card showed six rounds for Smith, two rounds for the 'Killer' and two even. The Montanan, who once knocked out Buddy Baer, but who has been stopped by almost every prominent heavy in the business at one time or another, was a changed man last night. He outboxed and outsped the lighter Negro to score heavily on points. Twice he had Coates on the floor in bad shape, and he took five of the hardest punches the Killer ever landed on any man, and they didn't even rock him." (Reno Evening Gazette)
