Why do refs keep breaking up fighters when they get close?

Watching many fights, why do ref's stop boxers when they get up close and start trading inside?? some fights , the ref stays out and lets the fighters get on with it. It seems as if there are 2 sports, one where fighting is allowed on the inside and one where it isnt.

Same with other sports. For instance, some refs or linesman give the benefit to the forward regarding offside in football, others don't.

Until there's concrete rules created, and there probably won't, this will always be a problem in boxing. Same as some judges scoring for agression over volume of punches.

I do think that refs weren't as strict about "in-fighting" over the decades, at least from the fights I have. Others might know better.

Quite close to a british ref, and spoke often on this subject. and a good ref will always keep a fight going while good clean punches are being thrown, but at times they have to say break for reasons such as holding, pulling down on other boxers and frequent use of the head. which is often not seen by viewers on telly or at ringside.

I think its quite hard to tell if there are little tricks like holding on the inside going on so I think they are over cautiouse.

Your Hopkins statement is incorrect as I read an artical the next morning in the New York Times that he was "disgusted" with the way "the Brits" were during the national anthem and said he felt after that moment that Floyd had to "kick his ass".

I do like watching most combat sports, K1, MMA and boxing. But I think the conclusion to this is, that in this corrupt sport, if you are the house fighter or have bought the ref, then you can box whatever way you want.

Some refs are also cautious to avoid fighters getting cut, especially if there is aready some damage around the eye already. Likewise if a fighter is already cut and bleeding the referee must be very very careful when boxers get too close.
