Seldon,Hide, Ferguson, and Gonzales weren't the best that Bowe beat.
Besides Holyfield, (who was better than any heavyweight in the 1940's except for the early 1940's Joe Louis) Bowe beat Tubbs, Donald, and Biggs.
You are seriously not convinced that Bowe wouldn't have been the top contender in the 1940's? You are comparing him to people like Curtis Sheppard, and Lee Q Murray ? Come on.
Bowe would have been easily the #1 contender in the early 1940's and probably would have been the champion in the late 1940's and early 1950's.
Rate these heavyweight champs.

Tubbs (who he barely beat)? A washed-up Biggs?? Talk about "bum of the month" . . .those fighters would have been Johnny Paycheck-like victims to Louis in the 40s, and not been in the class of the top black HWs of the period.Ambling Alp wrote:Seldon,Hide, Ferguson, and Gonzales weren't the best that Bowe beat.

Bowe fought great ONE night vs Holyfield and the rest of his career looked decent vs a garbage-pale collection of washed up fighters and never-weres.

First of all, Bowe had more than one great night. Look at the rematch against Holyfield. He barely lost that. There is no way that any fighter from the 1940's (besides Louis) would have came close. Bowe also won the 3rd fight with Holyfield as well.
Biggs wasn't washed up when he fought Bowe. Biggs was only 30, and only had 22 fights. That is a pretty decent win for a fighter on his way up.
Tubbs was a heavyweight champion and while past his prime still had a lot left. Another decent win for a fighter on his way up.
Larry Donald was an excellent boxer. Much better than some of the guys from the 1940's that you mentioned.
Outside of a cool nickname what is so special about someone like Curtis "Hatchetman" Sheppherd? The guy was a tomato can, plain and simple.
It would charitable to call him the Bert Cooper or the Jessie Ferguson of his day. Btw, Bowe beat them both easily.
Fighters like Seldon or Hide certainly had their limitations, but they were hardly "bums of the month". They had some ability.
Tubbs,Biggs,Donald,Seldon,Hide,Cooper, Ferguson Coetzer and the old Thomas and Dokes certainly were not legends, but all were certainly better than stiffs like Sheppherd or Johnny Paycheck.
Lee Q. Murray career certainly wasn't anything special either.
Bowe's fights with Holyfield alone should tell you that he was very good and was much better than Shepperd,Murray, or Thompson or Ray for that matter.
You would have to be living in fantasyland to think that any fighter of the 1940's (outside of Louis) could have fought Bowe's exact opponents and only had one loss.
