I'm sure Jason Estrada was saying his injury wasn't that serious and yet look at how he performed in '04. We are talking about a guy that won the Pan Am gold in '03.
He also came into camp, and the Olympics, some 40 Lbs. over what he was in the 2003 Pan Ams. Made a huge difference - that and his non-cooprative attitude. :o

The real reason for the early selection was the fact that the qualifiers started early with the World Championships.
Maybe that was the excuse. In 2004 the Pan Ams were a qualifier and we had the Olympic Trials after that (remember Aaron Garcia and Juan McPherson won the Pam Ams and didn't make the Olympic team?).
If Estrada is injured and not at his best, then send Porter to the next qualifier.
Trust me, all h*ll would break loose if the Olympic Trials winner was overturned and someone else put in his place. Shawn isn't permanently injured, from what I've heard.
Someone told me that winning the olympic trials only guaranteed your place in the Worlds. It would be at the discretion of the olympic coach if the individual boxer would continue for each qualifier. Some of the decisions would be based on how well the individual boxer is doing in camp and how well he does at the olympic qualifiers. If that is the case... is it true that at anytime the guys that did not qualify at the qualifiers thus far could be replaced at the final qualifier? If this is true then Porter could be sent to the next or final qualifier and if he won he would be the Olympian instead of Estrada. I am just checking if anyone knows this to be true or not. It was told to me by a pretty reliable source however, even he could be mistaken.

I read it on USA Boxing's site some time ago, but was unable to locate it again. At the time of reading it carefully, I understood it to read as you describe.

Wrong. Then it would have been called the "World Championships Qualifier or Trials."

Try that and there would be enough law suits to bury USA Boxing.

No. I think the only way this might work is if any of the boxers who already made our Olympic team and who had not qualified at the Worlds were too injured to participate in any of the Americas qualifiers.

As I said above - try this and there would be lawyers everywhere!

Eight boxers will compete in each of the 11 weight divisions at the double elimination tournament, which will determine the U.S. Olympic Team for Boxing.
From the USAB web site. And I haven't seen any exceptions to the above any where.
