Because of his experience he has great insight and that eye seems to work pretty well...and because of his experience he seems to have become blind in one eye.
But he should not get a free pass to make any outlandish statement and have it go unchallenged just because he has put hard time in the sport. If that were the case and simply participating in the sport makes you the ultimate authority then Stacy Goodson would be the best source of all boxing knowledge.
I would say his statements are always relevant and interesting when taken in context with his experience. But his assumptions are not always true. I think he has a a lot of facts correct......but he does not always parlay his facts to produce compete truths.
He has a passion driven agenda....so you just have to pick through the info carefully. He does not seem to be jolly about the fact that he was part of some great history. More he seems to be angry that everybody got it all wrong.
That's being might kind. I just read his 'assumption' on another thread that Gerry Cooney apparently couldn't punch . . .where the hell does he come up with this crap? His valuable gym experience? What the hell was he . . a towel boy??? I can't believe the number of people here who buy his 'old man of inside knowledge' angle . . .from the context of his posts I've seen nothing which demonstrated any 'inside' knowledge whatsoever but simply an obsessive, bitter individual who's happened to follow boxing for a good number of years. If he's some great insider why doesn't he go ahead and state who he is???
Here's a typical demonstration of GB insight:
Poster 1: I believe that Jimmy Ellis sparred ABC fighter once
Granberry: EVERYONE knows Jimmy Ellis knocked out that fraud Ali out so bad he was in a coma for 8 months! But the shrills of the Ali industry cover it up!!! Loath the pitiful Ali industry!!!
What a great contributer!!
I wouldn't go so far as to say he's great....but he is a contributor and he's a bit colorful.
You know I used to wonder if he was racist at first but he CLEARLY is not. He seems to be a an equal opportunity critic. He does have some favorites. Young and Frazier being two of them. And Ali and Leonard are on his hit list.
I used to think he really disliked any finesse fighter and liked the sluggers...but that CLEARLY is not the case. Young and Frazier....need I say more?
Eclectic describes him. He does have favor for the fighters who are orthodox for the most part. The "Talents" are on his hit list. I've known musicians like that. The guys that claim if you don't learn the fundamentals EXACT then you will never be any good. But I have learned that very often TALENT and HEART/SOUL will trump learned fundamentals. Not always, but more than the "orthodox relisgious" crowd will admit.
If you do not have natural god given talent then you better study the fundamentals, if you DO have it in great amount you may be able to wander from it a bit, but IF YOU DO HAVE TALENT AND YOU FOLLOW THE FUNDAMENTALS you will become the best of the best in most cases.
I have known some teachers to get very angry and bitter when someone who does not go by the book becomes extremely successful. Why? Maybe because it means that there proffession is not as important as they might have imagined.
Anyway this could explain some things.
