Ricky Hatton Applies For Promoters License
Let's be fair. He gets to cut out the middle man and he certainly has a big profile after the last fight. He can make a lot more money for himself provided he does the promioting job right. Even though historically boxer's companies go nowhere when the main man's stopped fighting, he can strike while the iron is hot.
He actually has a personality and can talk in front of cameras which is rare today with so many Americans making fools of themselves every time they open their mouths (see Tarver, yesterday).
Still, Hatton is one of the few fighters to hold a "lineal" Ring man approved title. On the other hand his choice of opposition (ie never Witter) is annoying at times and his drinking habits are shocking for a professional prize fighter.
Regardless of what happens, he is a phenomenon and caught on quicker than Calzaghe did. Even though Joe is better than Ricky, RH's success proves how important the publicity/personality side of the sport is.
I'm sure Amir Khan will want to fight Hatton when RH is past it, so that he can boost his own profile. In fact, Khan has been calling him out (prematurely).

I'm actually embarrassed for some of you who just predictably add your repitive bollox to each Hatton thread.
Change the record, you are boring me to tears. I bet Ricky is really cut up about it too.
Personaly I would relish a Hatton/Witter bout to go ahead, preferably in the next 18 months too. If Hatton were to stick his name on the dotted line win, loose or draw it would enhance his reputation considerably and be a great service to fans of boxing.DG. wrote:tony3 wrote:Despite all of the negative comments, I still don't think Hatton's got anything to prove to anyone as a fighter or a man.
BLINKERED!
So, you don't think he should fight Witter?
You don't think Hatton makes too many excuses about NOT fighting Witter?
I also think Witter has done more than enough to deserve the chance and the payday.
However I do think patience is required before condeming Hatton for not taking the fight because as long as they are both still active there is still a chance it may happen.
The way I see it Hatton's decision to avoid Witter in the past has been purely based on buisness sense. Witter at his best is a sensational boxer-puncher but up untill recently, his erratic performances have not endeared him to the box-office. If Hatton had taken that fight and come up short, his stock would have plummeted irrevocably and all of those big fights in America would have become no more than a distant dream.
Things are somewhat different now. Since Zabgate, Junior has rebuilt his career in style and is clearly on the up-and-up. Hatton no longer has an unbeaten record to preserve so his reasons for not taking the fight are diminishing (although I feel he needs a confidence booster before taking on someone as good as JW).
The bottom line is this; if Hatton ends his career without facing Witter in the next two years it will always leave the historians with a big fat question mark. However that still wouldn't detract from the fact that Hatton has done more for British Boxing on the world stage than any other fighter since the Benn/Eubank era and IMHO simply doesn't deserve the horrible backlash he's been recieving since losing to Floyd Mayweather.

The only OTHER person Hatton has done anything for on the World Stage is Matthew!
OH - and the BOOKMAKERS who fleeced the public!
I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A FIGHT HAVING TO BE BUILT FOR 7 YEARS!
Hatton ran out of excuses after the 'GO GET A BELT AND WE FIGHT' nonsense!
I will admit that Lewis was a glaring omission as he is obviously one of the most successful British Boxer of all time.More than Lennox?

On other stuff, I stand by what I've said.
Maybe you're a boxer yourself, so might have different perspective to me, I don't know. But I'm just a plain old observer and am not going to sit at this keyboard and start running Hatton down because he hasn't fought every single person I would have liked him too because I'm not the one taking the punches in there.
If you ask me the biggest gap in his CV isn't Witter, it was Cotto when he fought at junior welterweight. That's a contest I would have paid a years wage to see.
Essentially I agree that he should accomadate Witter somewhere down the line but I'm not going to turn into a hater if he doesn't because Hatton has already done far more with his talent than I dreamt possible.
As an aside, here's an interview sheds some interesting light on Hatton's state of mind.
Not only is his voice thick but he also seems uncommonly hesitant with his words. To cap it off he makes a rather strange remark about his loss to Mayweather.

I hate playing devils advocate but this has left me wandering if Hatton shouldn't think twice about climbing into the ropes ever again.
Or perhaps he's just exhausted and I'm reading into the footage way too deeply.

Oh, I didn't realise he lost a "10 round decision".tony3 wrote: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Byt37NnLQlI
hatton still did after dinner speaking when he was training for pbf !! i know that for a fact, cos he did one in boston in lincs.hitman_hatton1 wrote:since when has he done that lately. :xsteve689 wrote:That may be so but it seems obvious he is devoting too much time to out of the ring activities and only turning up 6 weeks before a fight to burn off the excess and get into shape. 14 weeks prep for mayweather.
so he's gone for a promoter's licence.
good luck to him.
let's hope he unseats allegedly allegedly off the top of british boxing one day.
have you hear the latest load of bullshit from the hatton camp:-
His father, Ray, said: "Ricky only criticised Mayweather once the fight was announced. It is not as if he was baiting him constantly over many years, so there is no comparison between the two."
who do these guys think they're kidding. They obviously think everbody is as thick as f*ck

Remind me what Eubank did for British Boxing on the World(American) stage? I know he was big in Europe and Asia(check this out http://www.fightnews.com/koizumi411.htm ) but he made British Boxing a laughing stock in America, his fights were on a sports channel on a Saturday afternoon and so no pure boxing followers were actually watching,it was mostly general sports followers catching him and saying 'Whos this gummy guy walking around like robocop??'(actual quote I heard in person).tony3 wrote:However that still wouldn't detract from the fact that Hatton has done more for British Boxing on the world stage than any other fighter since the Benn/Eubank era and IMHO simply doesn't deserve the horrible backlash he's been recieving since losing to Floyd Mayweather.DG. wrote:tony3 wrote:Despite all of the negative comments, I still don't think Hatton's got anything to prove to anyone as a fighter or a man.

Benn though did ALOT to erase the typical stand up Englishman boxer image in America, with the Watson,Quinones,De Witt,Barkley,Gent and Mcclellan scraps. Even introducing razzle dazzle to America. And Hatton has carried on from that. Its true that Benn/ Eubank 2 was the first fight that paid American TV(Showtime) went to outside of America, and it was because of BENN's WBC belt that King and TV were interested in,not Eubanks WBOgus, though admittedly it was Eubank they were interested in(they didn't get him,Eubank ducked Nunn and carried on defending his belt every month with dubious decisions, whereas Ricky went over).
Its interested to see the Showtime commentary of Benn/ Eubank 2,the Showtime commentators are clearly trying to put Eubank over, exaggerating everything he did,but they had to stop themselves after 3 or 4 rounds when they realised he was boxing shit.

If Hatton would have fought Witter straight after he'd baited him as Mayweather did when Hatton dissed him live to the US nation after the JLC fight, then Junior wouldn't have had to bait him over many years. It is an exact comparison!
Good point Al Savani. Under the microscope, it cannot be denied that Benn's distinguished stay in the US did a heck of a lot more to thrust British boxing in the the international spotlight than Eubanks conservative matchmaking ever really did.Al Savani wrote:Remind me what Eubank did for British Boxing on the World(American) stage? I suppose I tie them together bacause of the memories of their colourful rivalry but in this context it might have been an inaccuracy.
Eubank was still an amazing fighter when he chose to be though.
Thanks Chambers2. Clearly you understood the point I'm making. The Hatton's see what they want to see and believe that what they say is credible with most boxing fans...Chambers2 wrote:Excuse No. 47 " "Ricky only criticised Mayweather once the fight was announced. I'm so, so tired and bored of the Hatton PR machine.

The champions are not that good, so they should be taken as easy comeback fights.Asterix wrote:I think you're a harsh critic. I would definitely grant a boxer an easy (although very few fights are "easy", you get my drift) fight after his first loss. Maybe it's because I'm not too bothered if Hatton fights again. I'll definitely watch if he does, but not be too bothered if he retires.
